Sunday: Final Day of Festival!
Today, like the other Sundays was nearly the same. Previous weeks we have simply gone downstairs to the sanctuary of the church we have been staying in Casoria for the service. Today we went to the sister church located in Arzano, which is the next suburb over. Drew, David, and I jammed along with their worship team and then played Come Thou Fount for the congregation. After the service we separated into three groups and met up with our host families for pranzo. Pranzo at our host family was wonderful and we had a great time communicating and translating over the 3-hour meal. We left a few minutes early to get back to the church and began preparing for our final performance of the tour. We worked out another rocking set-list, loaded up, and headed to Festival. We were privileged to have Franco Altieri open for us. We did a input check, and got into it straightaway. About 4 songs into our set, we were informed we could only play one more tune. We just as quickly adapted, and played two more songs to finish strong. The crowed tonight was the largest of the whole festival and although it was short, it was truly a blast to play for and it also seemed to have the most people come forward during the invitation for salvation. Afterwards we all helped tear down, and pack stuff in preparation for the following day. At roughly 11pm we headed out with 30 or so from our team for pizza (a typical meal time for us here).

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

September 12th, 2009 Saturday: 2nd to last night!
Yesterday some of the bands left to head back to the states, and tonight is our last night to share the stage with the amazing Brandon Bee band. Sound check was rushed and we were not very happy with the sound, but it was yet another opportunity to have an eternal perspective on our work. The longer we are here the more we have learned that, what is important is not the immediate effect of our work, but the overall effect which takes much longer and is often not visible to us. It has been said many times while we have been here, that our entire purpose for being over here could have been to influence just one person if that is what God wanted to have happen. Just think of the person that lead C.S. Lewis to salvation, or Billy Graham for that matter! What matters the most in this, is having an eternal perspective about the little frustrations, the upsets, and the way things never seem to go as planned. In the end, these irritations will be forgotten. Its difficult to give a clear picture of all of our experiences, because I typically just want to talk about the fun stuff and the good stuff that happens, but that is not an accurate representation of our full experience over here. I want it to be clear neither I nor any of the band is complaining, just letting you know that this is like any other mission trip where there are good and negative experiences. Let me end this day by saying this has been an incredible experience in all the different aspects and we are all very glad and grateful to have been able to be a part of what is happening here in Italy.

Friday September 11, 2009

September 11, 2009

First off, although we are in a foreign country surrounded by a foreign culture, and foreign people, our hearts and minds are remembering those lost on September 11th, 2001. We also want to extend a heartfelt thank you to all those in the US military protecting our individual freedoms, and for sacrificing so much, we truly appreciate all of you!!! No cliché little patriotic phrases, you have our utmost respect and gratitude! Thank you for serving.

Friday
The boys along with our good friend Trevor have been dreaming of climbing Mt. Vesuvius ever since we got to Naples. This morning was our only available opportunity to attempt this great adventure. We five brothers, plus Trevor, loaded into a van and head towards the famed mountain ready for a great adventure. We had some trouble finding the right trail, but soon stumbled upon it and made it to the top just in time. The amount of energy required to erupt and eject that much material is beyond belief. All that remains are sheer cliffs that make up the walls of the very deep crater. When we hurriedly left in the morning I had grabbed the only food available from the church, which turned out to be a breakfast pie thing, which we all devoured at the summit. We headed back to the church just in time for another great chapel service. Afterwards we all met for pranzo, which lasted several hours of great food and fellowship with the team.
Festival
Tonight we were the first band up, so we got right into setting up and sound checking. We enjoyed playing for some new friends we have met that attend the church we are staying at. After festival ended we met a some of our good friends on the mission team to do some swing dancing and play some games back at the church.

Thursday, September 10, 2009.

Thursday, September 10, 2009.

Festival
We were once again privileged to share the stage with Brandon Bee, Seven Flags, and Bob Kilpatrick. We had a really great set and covered Beautiful Day by U2, which was really fun. Later that evening Drew and I again joined Bob and the Seven Flags band to play a few tunes and had a wonderful time. Once again people filled the seats to listen to the gospel message, several coming forward to receive salvation! Afterwards we loaded with a bunch of the people staying with us at the church and head to the most popular gelateria in Naples. From 9:00pm-1am the place is packed with people. We all had incredible, fresh gelato and then we broke out some instruments and jammed to draw a crowed. It was actually a relatively slow night at the shop, but we were still able to draw a small crowd and do a little advertising for Festival. Afterwards, those of us who missed dinner went to a small local pizzeria and fellowshipped over some great food.

Wednesday Sept 9, 2009

September 9, 2009

Wednesday
Today another crew of bands was in the works for the evening session at Festival. We opened the evening with a fun set featuring several tunes from “Night and Day” and had a wonderful time playing. After we finished the Brandon Bee band played a rocking set. Meanwhile Drew and I met with Bob Kilpatrick to workout a few tunes to play during his set a little later. The next band up from Sacramento California, was a fun group called Seven Flags. After a great set Bob, joined them for a few tunes together and then Drew and I came out for a couple tunes and had a great time! When we arrived back at the church we discovered that we had the night off from playing music. We also found (in true Italian style) that we needed to be there all ready to go just in case something went wrong. So we prepared, loaded up, and headed over to Palacasoria to help set up for Festival. Once the music started for the night we got word we would not be needed so Drew and I headed back to the church to work on finalizing preparations for our new EP. Although we are still waiting on final word from Disk Makers, our new EP titled “Night and Day” should be available for sale September 22 at the Puyallup Fair.

Monday Sept. 7, 2009

September 7, 2009

Monday
Monday morning we loaded up with a group of about 20 others and headed to down town Napoli to look around. While we were there we got to visit a museum called the Museo Cappella Sansevero which has the most incredible sculpture called “The Veiled Christ”. Unfortunately we could not take any pictures of the beautiful piece of art, but let me tell you that if you ever have the opportunity to come see this, it will blow your mind. We soon left and headed back to the church where we all met for chapel as a whole group. Afterwards we enjoyed pranzo together and began to prepare for our evening set.

Festival
Festival Once again we had a great band from Atlanta called “I’m Chinese” open the night. We had a different front of house sound tech tonight who had the sound turned up to a ridiculous level, way too loud! Once again we were able to practice the motto for our trip: flexibility! Every night we perform we just have more fun, and more fun, getting to share our joy with the Italians, the sound techs and even our fellow short term mission friends.

Sunday Sept. 6,

September 6, 2009
Sunday is a big day during festival for many reasons. Church is in the morning, and on this particular Sunday Drew, David, Daniel, and I were privileged to play with the worship team at the church we are staying at. After church everyone was split up into small groups and then we met with our Italian host families for a full afternoon of food. The Konzelmans were split up into two groups and each had an amazing 7-course meal with their host family. Then we rush back to the church where we all complained about how bloated we all felt and how amazing the food was. Then it was time to load up and head to festival.

Festival
Festival is mostly the same general format every night. Tents, or gazebos as they are called here, open up at about 5:30 with many different carnival style events for people of all ages to have fun. The first band of the evening usually starts at 6:20 and plays for roughly 40 minutes. The second band comes on at 7:15, and the final band at 8:00. After this the tents and inflatables all close down and people head to the main-stage for the evening presentation. This usually consists of some worship music in Italian followed by a skit (which the Italians really seem to love) and then one of the pastors presents the gospel message in a unique way each night. At the end of the message there is an alter-call while some music is play in the background. After festival ends for the day, there is an exodus of Italians and Americans to different pizzerias and gelaterias for a late night of fellowship and building relationships.

Crunch time prep...

Friday September 4, 2009

Day Two: Major work day plus a few more arrivals…
Today began with breakfast whenever people could grab it and then we met up for a Bible study and orientation as a crew. Orientation lasted for about 2 hours and then we all set about on our assigned tasks. All the men had the task of transporting huge inflatables from the basement of the church to the festival grounds. Each inflatable weighing several hundred pounds less than an army tank, it took 12 or so men to load all them and by the time we finished the task it was time to head back to the church for our first pranzo lunch with a majority of the crew finally altogether. For the remainder of the afternoon and evening everyone continued working on setting up gazebos and the other activities at festival. Meanwhile the Konzelmans headed back to the church and began rehearsing individually. After a large dinner with everyone, the Konzelmans regrouped and began going through the set for the first night of festival. Some of the boys got the toe nails painted and we all went to bed… while some of us were still constipated. The end.

Arrivals...

Thursday September 3, 2009

Day one: Arrivals…
For the core Delta leadership crew who has been in Napoli for several days we set about working in earnest. The Italian style is to procrastinate and in the end they work most efficiently under pressure. We are here to help them along, and ensure that it all gets done, whether its their way or ours. The days are usually divided into before pranzo and after pranzo. Before pranzo, the leadership has meetings and gets a lot of individual work done until about 11am. After about 10am, everyone is awake and has begun working at different tasks, some are already firmly assigned to different teams or projects while some people are just floaters bouncing around the church or running errands, etc. We all gather together for pranzo usually at a little after 2pm and consume a multiple course delight, today a was an especially good type of spaghetti. The afternoon was again a time to finish tasks started earlier in the day. For the Konzelmans, this was a time to get together and try to practice. New arrivals from the states have been flowing in throughout the day. Some people were caught at different airports due to missed flights, but the sum of the group should all be here by tomorrow.

Discovering Napoli...

August 29th through September 2nd

Here in Naples!

We have been in the city of Naples or Napoli since August 29th, and at the time of writing it is now September 2. It seems everything about Italians is amplified by the Neapolitans, the conversations are louder, the food is better, the café is stronger, the drivers crazier. In fact there is such a strong regional pride that many Neapolitans will never leave here because they are what makes Forza Napoli what it is.

What we have seen!

Lots of Napoli and the suburbs of Casoria and Arzano because this is where we are staying. We are based in the only stand alone Christian-evangelical church. Italy is much the same as France or Japan when it comes to the percentage of Christians ½ of 1 percent. These are very dark spiritual places where there is an incredible testimony behind every believer. Napoli is very near the coast as it is a port city. Although we are about 20-30minute drive from the sea, we have gotten to see it on several occasions. One particular evening we were all given a grand tour of the best and most scenic viewpoints in Napoli and some of the best in all of Italy by one of the members of the church. On Tuesday we all went on a tour of the Amalfi coast and visited several on the most picturesque beautiful areas we have ever been to in person. We all wondered if this type of place really exists, and now we know!

What we have eaten!

Real “authentic” Neapolitan pizza, and pizza, and more pizza. What is very interesting is there are only about 5 different types of pizza here, all made with the same thin, but soft dough and baked in wood-fired, stone ovens. When you eat a typical slice of pizza, you fold it in half lengthwise and eat it like a taco. In order not to offend those who cook the food, especially when we eat pranzo at the church, we must eat all the food set before us. If you didn’t already know it, these portion sizes are huge, and there are usually 3 courses to a meal. Eating here is similar in difficulty to working out for several hours at the gym, it just has the opposite effect when you finish.

Day 6
Today was our last full day for seeing all the sites in Roma. We started out by visiting the Pantheon. All the names of different sites run together and have little meaning if you have never seen them before, we all assumed the Pantheon was something different from what it turned out to be. It actually was every bit as impressive though and the pictures really cannot do justice to the incredible size and architecture involved in such an amazing building. After the Pantheon we strolled through the beautiful Piazza Navona and had lunch at a restaurant famous for their incredible salads, which is quite a feat because in Italy they don’t use any salad dressings, just olive oil and or vinegar. Next we headed back into the streets ending up at the Spanish steps and the shopping center of Rome. Dolce e Gobbana, Prada, Armani, United Colors of Benetton, Bvlgari, Versace, etc, the place was craziness just to walk through! We caught a metro and headed to a tour of the Vatican Museum, which was amazing but after already walking so much it was an arduously long process just to make it out the other side. Vatican City, which is also its own nation-state, is a very interesting place and stirs many emotions about the history of both Christianity, as well as the Roman Catholic Church. After this we parted ways, Drew and David were on a mission to find a pair of Camper shoes for Drew and David was looking to find a particular style of shirt that we saw tons of men wearing. The rest of the crew called it a day and headed back to our casa.

Day 7
Today was all about checking out of our hotel/apartment and catching the train to Naples, or Napoli as the Italians call it. As is true for practically all large families, it took us a long time to get our stuff all packed up and moved out. The Ford Fiesta was never designed to hold as much as we packed into it that morning. Instruments and backpacks stack all around and on top of us as we bounced along the road to Termani. Although traveling and moving this amount of stuff is a thoroughly exhausting experience, it was infinitely better or more efficient than when we first arrived in Rome. After the first load was dropped off Drew and Papa brought the last full load of luggage and returned the rental car. The train ride from Rome to Naples was incredibly hot and sweaty. The train workers must have not showered in roughly 8 years because their BO was strong enough to singe hair and the odor knocked small children unconscious. We were warned to watch out for thieves and pick-pockets in Italy, but every Italian friend in Roma warned us thoroughly to watch our backs because Napoli is the worst of the worst for theft in all of Italy. Most Italians will not even go to Napoli for fear or it. We were so scared/prepared for the worst when we hit the sidewalk outside the train terminal in Napoli. Our attention and cautiousness was absolutely necessary as there were multiple people standing ready to grab our stuff and run. It was the most intense traveling experience on this trip thus far! We were picked up by our Delta friends and quickly whisked away from the rough area.

Rome and some more...

Day 4
Today for the first time the whole family caught the metro into Roma. It is really beyond words to describe the city and the ruins. The size of the ruins that are still standing are unbelievable huge. What this city must have looked like in its prime! Even today it is beyond belief and just huge! After seeing many of the palaces, the Colosseum set about finding a nice restaurant for pranza. After lunch and a espresso we headed back to Termani and parted ways. Papa, Mom, and Darien set about renting a car while Drew, David, Daniel and I set about renting scooters. After waiting around for a bit we finally found the shop owner and got all squared away with a pair of scooters. For the rest of the evening we drove home and had a wonderful dinner and played more music for our friends from the restaurant. Afterwards Drew and I took night tour of the city on our scooters. So much fun!!!

Day 5
Although we were out late we were not expecting to sleep in until 1pm. While we slept Darien and Papa went to the hospital for Darien’s final checkup. Later we found out that he is fully recovered and has no signs of the virus, praise God! We spent the next few hours touring on our scooters and then headed back home for Papa’s birthday dinner with our friends from the restaurant. Today was relaxing and we are starting to get to know our way around the city now.

ROME ROME ROME...

Buon giorno!

I am writing to you from a veranda overlooking the countryside about 30-minutes outside of Rome. As I sit here and think back over the last week it is amazing what has happened to get us here.

First of all, I personally want to say thank you to all who have helped and supported us. This is only possibly by His grace and your aid and generosity! May God continue to richly bless you and those you are serving.

Day 1
In the last 3 days leading up to the day we flew out, Drew and I got about 5 hours of sleep and the rest of the family only a little more than that. The best news is that we finished all the tracking for our upcoming EP, due to be released September 21st at the Puyallup Fair. We had a great flight from Seattle to Toronto (our favorite Canadian city) and then caught our connection to Rome. Most of us were still too wired to sleep much and we arrived in the airport in Rome at 1:00pm local time. After picking up our checked baggage we loaded up and began what was to become our longest and most grueling trek. Loaded up with heavy bags, instruments and carry on items, we could only make it several hundred yards between resting breaks. After a train, a metro subway, and a bus ride, we arrived at a random bus stop near our final destination. We hailed a taxi to find our casa and finally arrived all together at 8:00 pm. We all agreed it was our most exhausting traveling experience ever. Putting things in perspective though, this was nothing compared to Dustin Leigh’s experience during the Amazing Race. We had an interesting dinner buffet and finally checked in to our place. It is beautiful and spacious enough for us all to fit comfortably. While most of us slept peacefully Darien, who has been sick since before we left Washington got sick again.

Day 2
Darien’s condition continued to get worse during the night and the following morning. My parents talked with the staff here and not long after, Darien was picked up and whisked away in an Ambulance. Although we didn’t know at the time, it was a viral infection combined with severe dehydration. Mom spent the day at the hospital getting things figured out as Darien was admitted and began getting treated. Both spent the night there. The rest of the boys spent the day at our apartment resting and after dinner we played music in the small restaurant across the street.

Day 3
The restaurant owner gave us a ride in the morning to the hospital to visit Darien and Mom. After we found them Darien and Mom told us stories about their intense and somewhat miraculous experience in the Italian hospital, and how the treatment and medical staff were excellent. At Mom’s recommendation, the boys went down to the hospital café and had an amazing lunch of grilled pannini, Fanta, and a cappuccino, for 4 euros a person! The boys (Papa included) said goodbye to Darien and Mom and then headed to Termini in central Rome. We spent the day walking through the city, constantly amazed at the beautiful architecture and the old cobblestone streets. What an amazing city!

Luck favors the prepared...

THE NEW EP, ITALY, A HOUSE REMODEL, AND CRAZINESS!!!

The Konzelman household is busy on a regular basis, but this month has been, and will be especially insane.

Music:
Drew, David, Daniel and I have been working very hard writing and arranging for our up-coming EP (It has yet to be titled). We are in what is called the pre-production period of recording. Hundreds of hours are spent before we set foot in the studio. We are very very excited to be for the first time, releasing an album of all original material that we will also produced. The release for this EP should be September 21st. It will be available for purchase at our shows during the Puyallup Fair Sept 21-27, and will also be available at that date from our website by clicking here.

Italy:
This year we have the opportunity to team up with Delta Ministries to be a part of Festival Casoria 2009, a large evangelical out-reach in Casoria, a suburb of Naples. Primarily we will be headlining the concert series portion of the 10 day festival, but also helping out with other needs as they arise. Be sure to check our YouTube channel and our Facebook for photos and updates!

Family:
We having been hoping, dreaming, and praying that someday we would be able to remodel our house and make it adequately sized for how large our family is. Well, prayers and hopes are finally being answer and realized. In order to remodel, we must move completely out of our existing house. We are now in the process of moving out of our house and into our small rental house also located on our property. While this is very exciting, it is also a large task to accomplish. Our goal is to be completely moved out by the time we leave for Italy. We always appreciate prayer for our family, but prayer especially for this task as it will be especially challenging! Thanks and may God continue to bless you abundantly!

Thanks for reading and check back often!!!
-Derek

Post Leahy Camp 09

After a wonderful time such as a vacation or a camp experience, or in our case both, sometimes it is difficult to get back into a home-life routine. It's sort of a reality shock, "oh yeah, this is reality". At the same time though there is the positive side to getting back home. Home is where life happens, where stuff gets done. So that is where we are right now. Back home in little Puyallup, Washington re-acclimatizing to being productive (or that's at least what I am telling myself!).

Update:

Leahy Camp 2009
Let me begin by saying I am now a big fan of Air Canada. Superb service and a great experience all around. Once we got to camp it was a large musical family reunion of sorts. A shout out to all our dear friends: the Leahy families, Natalie MacMaster, the Harveys, the Woods, Nathiel Smith, Eric and Phil Provencher, Emily Flack, the Blacks, the Corkerys, Melissa Payne, Sarah Robinson, Mark Sullivan, Mac Morin, the Connells, and all our other friends. We had an amazing time with all, and there will be plenty of pictures and videos online in the coming weeks. Check our site konzelmans.com, or on Facebook to see all our adventures!!!

Currently we are planning and preparing for a very busy 2 month period. We will be writing, rehearsing, and recording for our upcoming EP due to be released sometime in late September. On August 21, we will be flying to Rome Italy and will be performing in Naples for 10 days. We will spend about 3 weeks in Italy and then return home just in time for the Puyallup Fair (also known as the Washington State Fair). More on the upcoming stuff TBA at a later date though! The fireworks display is hosted by several sponsors on the island and is one of the best kept secrets in the northwest.

On the 5th of July Drew, David, Daniel and I will be flying to Toronto and then driving to Lakefield Ontario for the Leahy Music Camp with the Leahy Families, Natalie MacMaster, Rick Pritchard, among other phenomenal teachers and fellow musicians. On our return trip we will be visiting some family in Minnesota.

We have begun tracking our next album! The first song to be laid down is an original tune called "Flowers In Her Hair". Stay tuned as I will keep this updated as soon as there is any news, and in the mean time enjoy this summer weather!!!

-Derek

First Blog entry!!!

I have thought about how appropriate a weekly blog would be for our family for quite a while. Now its a reality!!!

Weekly update:

Welcome to the first weekly blog for the Konzelman family and Konzelman Band. This week Drew has been teaching David and I to work on our website and keep it updated! At first it seemed WAY technical and over my head but now, its getting easier to use. This blog is another aspect of a new aggressive passion that has been brewing over the last several weeks for a new vision about how the band will operate in the future.

Musically we are working mostly on individual parts and making final changes to arrangements. We plan on starting the project with a first set of about 5 tunes to commence tracking. If this goes according to plan, we should begin tracking as early as next week (3rd-4th week in May). This is getting exciting!!! Stay tuned!

-Derek
